Management Consultant,

Sammie Chan

What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role?

I’m a Management Consultant in Accenture’s Human Capital practice within the Communication, Media and Technology business area. May sound a bit lengthy! Basically I work on projects that focus on the people aspect of consulting such as change management, learning and development etc. My current project focuses on quality assurance and aims to solve process inefficiencies within client teams in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Can you tell us a little about Accenture’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

What drew me to Accenture was how collaborative everyone is and how inclusive the organisation is right from day one. A graduate role with Accenture is definitely a role that will throw people into the deep end with client exposure and stretch roles from the very beginning but the unique aspect is the safety net senior leadership provide in allowing you to grow and learn while still having support when needed.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university?

Initially I wanted to work in Human Resources and so did a Bachelor of Business majoring in HR. However after joining lots of different societies in my first year of uni and balancing all the different priorities, I realised that consulting would suit me better in that it would give me the scope to work on a variety of projects and have roles that would challenge me. Consulting is more about having the right attitude and personality aspects such as strategic thinking and problem solving abilities as Accenture can teach you everything else you need to know for your roles.

What surprised you when you entered your role?

Easily the sheer scale of Accenture and the breadth of work we do! Every few months I get to the point where I think I know quite a few Accenture people and then I’ll attend an event and meet so many more! In terms of my roles I think I was surprised at how while you may have an idea of the kind of consulting work you want to do – be prepared to do anything! As consulting is driven by client demand it means you’ll be in a variety of roles in your career which might take you by surprise but in the long term it means you gain more knowledge and insight than if you had only done the same work over and over again.

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Accenture?

Yes – do your research! Accenture’s scope is huge so research the kind of projects we work on and what area of the business you feel would make sense for you to work in. Make sure you attend networking events to meet our recruiters and get advice from Accenture representatives. During the interviews, focus on showing your strengths and what you can bring to the company be that relevant experience, a passion for problem solving etc.

Do you have any advice for someone interested in Consulting?

Get involved in societies that have case study competitions and read up on the industry. Definitely attend career fairs and networking events when possible to ask questions about what is consulting like, what kind of work can you expect and questions like what will you actually be doing day to day?! Consulting can seem like such a mystery as every project and client is different so learn as much as you can. Plus it never hurts to be remembered by the recruiters and representatives!
