First Years Guide
You’re hurled across the room as the rocket roars into the stratosphere, a raw concoction of nerves, excitement and bring-it-on-ness coursing through your veins. You press your face
against the cold glass of the window and catch a fleeting glimpse of the thousands of ships outside, streaming upwards alongside yours. Slowly, one by one, the ships peel away in lazy arcs across the sky, each carrying a friend, an acquaintance or a classmate to distant planets. Slowly, what had been your entire world for the past few years dwindles to a speck in the distance. You close your eyes. Your heart thumps. The rocket roars. And suddenly…silence. You open your eyes and breathe. It’s amazing. The lamps along the main walkway glisten softly in the darkness like stars. The blades of grass of the village green dance in the wind like comet tails across the cosmos. Who knew that there could be so…much. So much to see. So much to try. So many people to meet. So much to do!
Welcome, brave First Year, to the vast, confusing, daunting, amazing and breathtaking world that is UNSW.

So wherever your adventure takes you, this trusty little companion will help keep you warm and safe as you sail across the starry skies of uni life. Just remember…
We all try to find ourselves at uni. But there’s no harm in getting a little lost along the way…
It was the summer of 2006, Avril Lavigne was bae, and Lindsay Lohan was sober. This was also the year that we received our very first Tamagotchi. From feeding to scolding we became devoted mothers and fathers, tending to our family day and night. Life suddenly changed from kicking bark at our oblivious crush to actual mating of our tamagotchis beneath the gum littered underside of a primary school desk. It was an all consuming, enrapturing experience until – tragedy struck. Our little tama had died amidst a pile of poo.
In those days there was no such thing as Tinder so we turned to the nearest Kmart toy shelf. It was here that we found something to fill the void, the Furby. Though noisy and somewhat creepy, we eventually found our minds being cast from the past so that when we found out there was a reset button for our dear Tamagotchi, we barely felt the need to go back at all.
Like being the new parent of a Tamagotchi, university life can be overwhelming, confusing and unforgiving. But the process of making new friends and shedding what is lost is an intrinsic part of growing into your own person. Indeed, it is to this end that your wizened editors have prepared for you an eclectic selection of everything from industry insight to life know-how all accessible at www.unswbsoc.com in the hope that you too, will find your Furby.
