Meet our very own board’s 5 star rated UBER driver, Luke (or “Johnny Smith” as referred to by the UNSW Times)! Not only is he super friendly and charismatic (and a lowkey hopeless romantic), he has a large bundle of expertise under his belt (also has a bachelors degree in memes). Having come to UNSW halfway through 1st year after moving universities, he has switched degrees 3 times, flown the seas to Hong Kong on a global practicum AND has a highly impressive HD WAM to top it off…he could be our very own careers advisor! Don’t be afraid of his dodgy 6 seater as it serves him well through his trek from the far west to uni – and of course all the various stops along the way. What’s even more interesting is that Luke is multilingual in German and Italian! So don’t hesitate to strike up a convo with him – maybe even learn a few languages while you’re at it (and hopefully see his cute doggo too).
The loving tiger mum to our co-president’s suburban dad, Joanna Ma is a self-proclaimed workaholic and full-time doggo lover. Whilst juggling her part time job of being a paralegal, Joanna still excels academically at University, fully encapsulating “We get it you do law.”
Whilst she isn’t winning any Wimbledon Tennis tournaments as her fashion often implies, Joanna uses her public speaking skills to bring home Case Comp trophies as she cracks in teams of singles, doubles and quadruples. Joanna’s absolute loyalty for the Sydney Swans is trumped only by her undying love for her friends and family… oh and the Geelong Cats. So, if you ever see our Li Na walking down campus, or hear some beautifully hummed Christmas jingles in the ASB Hallways, never be afraid to give BSOC’s resident Princess Leia a friendly chat! She’ll make sure to laugh at all your jokes, no matter how bad or corny they are.
Say hello to our very own overachieving treasurer – Lucy Zhao!
When she’s not balancing the books of BSOC and shooting hoops at uni, you’ll probably find her studying away for their next finance exam to maintain that all important HD WAM (Dean’s List again in 2018 anyone?).
Rumour has it that she’s developed a severe distaste for sun exposure from studying wayyy too much.
However, behind all of that, Lucy is a super caring person that will always go out of their way to help you out whenever you need her.
This includes if you ever need the lyrics to any Beyoncé song that you can imagine!
So if you ever see her around uni, don’t be shy to say hello or just have a sing-a-long!
Introducing BSOC’s resident onion as you peel through each of Jackson’s layers to discover his many passions and hobbies. It only makes sense that the Vice President of Activities has a strong interest, and dare we say, talent for a large array of sports. From running on fields in a heated game of rugby to skiing down hills on a snowboard, Jackson will be sure to have developed a nice TAN from his days in the sun. If that layer isn’t to your fancy, then prepare to cry in wonder and awe as you watch him dance to Sunmi’s “Gashina” or belt out Black Pink’s “As if it’s you’re Last” riveting ballad. At his core, Jackson the backbone of BSOC as he’s sure to be Behind The Scenes (BTS) working to make sure every event runs smoothly, some might even say it’s part of his “DNA”. Get hyped for 2018 because Activities in BSOC will never be the same again!
VICE PRESIDENT (ACTIVITIES)
When you first meet Janette, you will realise that like an owl, she is both wise and has a very unusual sleep schedule.
When she’s finally awake, you’ll often find her posing with her peace signs in photos, constantly dabbing, or just dancing to the latest tunes.
However, she’s still able to keep her cool as she tries to win her next game of poker.
As one of the sweetest and most approachable people at UNSW, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with Janette!
But if you’re struggling to find her, just keep an eye out for a girl reppin’ Tommy Hilfiger, or find her on the field dominating a game of oztag!
VICE PRESIDENT (EXTERNAL)
Beneath the super-friendly and vivacious smile of BSOC’s own “Jono Lam” is an empathetic and outgoing guy who’s always trying to share the latest memes and fun-fact videos with everyone around him.
Having travelled through much of Asia, Jono has alot of experience to share.
When he’s not organising all of his calendars and trello boards, Jono enjoys singing along to K-Pop, and re-enacting scenes from K-Dramas like The Unit.
But don’t get him started about food.
Having visited Japan several times, Jono will spend literally hours lecturing people about how the ramen at Manpuku will never be as good as those in Tokyo.
VICE PRESIDENT (INTERNAL)
Despite being the oldest person on the executive team, don’t be misled by her small stature and childish/sassy antics! Take note of the autonomous working force she truly is. Behind Lisa’s capability of designing lit cover photos and pursuing marketing ventures, Lisa suffers a serious condition of workaholism during the most extraordinary hours of the day. It is an 8th wonder of the modern world how Lisa is still able to fork out time and lend a helping hand in the most opportune moments to her fellow peers.
But when you hear the term, “what you see is what you get”, Lisa’s formidable sleep deprived RBF does not do justice to the truly wonderful person she is; a genuinely caring and “soft marshmallow” natured individual deep down to put it best. So if you ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut, suffer fashion creativity and excitement or simply just want to know more about alpacas, definitely pop by and say hi to Lisa!
VICE PRESIDENT (OPERATIONS)
Whether he’s cracking a bad joke or amazing you with his dunking skills, Will Chen’s bound to keep you entertained.
As one of our resident Social directors, this life of the party keeps the party going but is also always down for a good chat.
So, don’t leave this man hanging and experiencing FOMO in not being able to get to know you by saying hi when you’re out and about.
To be fair it won’t be that hard to find him, just be on the lookout for who religiously wears a shirt, RM Williams, some chinos and a big fat smile.
If you spot a girl always wearing an oversized shirt, shorts shorts and adidas stans than you’ve probably seen Amy around. Keeping it forever casual and easy going, you can spark her eyes with any weird or trivial facts. Try talking to her and you’ll probably keep hearing xD and guh guh guh the whole time, and damn if you argue with her she probably is going to win. Maybe you could win an argument by bringing an ibis with you – she has a highly irrational fear of them. But social is seriously embedded into Amy, with a love to go out on the weekends and always naturally bringing the party around her with her body contortionist skills, she’s always down to talk and make your day.
Meet Jess, BSOC’s ‘extra’, adventure-loving dog-enthusiast! Although she may look terrifying (it’s just her face, we swear) on the outside, she’s definitely full of laughs, energy and fun. Our one-third social director loves to travel, and when she’s not planning the next major social event, she will most likely be found netflix and chilling (Brooklyn Nine-nine anyone?). Often found taking photos of literally every meal before she eats, this passion and persistence definitely extends to her hard work towards the Social portfolio. Jess is a motivated, passionate individual, who never shies away from an opportunity to showcase her exceptional oratory skills (wow, she’s a LawSoc director too?)
Dubbed as BSOC’s very own ray of sunshine, Kara’s contagious smile and sunny personality will always brighten up your day! When our well-travelled Sports Director isn’t planning her next trip to Hawaii (she’s been 6 times!) she’s definitely being pranked on by the rest of her directors. Whether she’s being tricked onto a rollercoaster or convinced to do something funny, Kara’s bubbly laughter can always be heard around the business building and is as refreshing as her favourite fruit, the coconut! Quite a hopeless romantic, Kara’s love for long walks by the beach and Gossip Girl (she watches reruns 24/7) can only be topped by her limitless compassion and eagerness to place a smile on everyone she meets. So if you’re ever need of a dose of sunshine, make sure to say hello to Kara Ho!
Not surprisingly, our Sports Director, Robert, is BSOC’s very own scholar sportsman! Although super competitive when it comes to playing rugby, don’t let this deter you from striking up a conversation with him – always friendly and hilarious to boot, anyone can bond with him over a shared love of (dank) memes. When he’s not busy being a rowing coach to Year 9 students or vibing to Mura Masa, Rob likes being a bit of a homebody, but is also always up for an adventure, exploring places like national parks (get a guy who can do both, right?) One of the many things even more impressive than the long list of countries he’s travelled to is his endless list of friends – due to his undeniable charisma and kind nature, Rob is always ready to listen and provide some expert advice to anyone who needs a chat.
Good things come in small packages, and that is the phrase that encapsulates Vivian. Being the resident OG Cabra Viet LG, Vivian is sure to bring her enthusiasm everywhere she goes. She loves to go karaoke with her friends, and is almost a constant fixture at Square Café in Strathfield. Some say she is 50% condensed milk, because she’s so sweet! Vivian is understanding, kind, passionate, and always down for a chat. Although she seems shy at first, once you get to know her she is an endless supply of laughter and fun! If you are ever around campus and see the iconic grey hair, don’t be afraid to say hi!
Meet our very own retired hypebeast and resident gentleman, Lien. When he isn’t busy stuffing his face with food or flexing in his hot pink slides; of which he is never seen without, he can be found nerding out to Star Wars or chilling to some Childish Gambino. Always one to help out, he is one of the nicest members of BSOC and won’t say no to any request, especially if it’s helping someone to finish their meal. He was also a proud cellist in the Sydney Youth Orchestra and this talent never left him. So, if you are ever lacking dinner time entertainment, or need to take that date with a special someone to fairytale proportions, hit up Mr Zhu for some private classical entertainment.
Meet Carmen, our bright and bubbly Competitions Director! Fuelled by a genuine desire to help all those around her, Carmen is truly an incredibly compassionate person. Having volunteered in Laos, her big heart is only rivalled by her even bigger love for all things KPOP. When Carmen isn’t halfway across the world (having been to 8 countries in the past year alone), you can find her busy planning some of UNSW’s biggest competitions for you to showcase your talents to the business world. But not to worry, you’ll never have to COMPETE for this busy bee’s attention, as Carmen is not only extremely organised, but also super easy to talk to. So if you see her around campus don’t be afraid to ask her about her latest trip to Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam… or any other country because she’s probably been there too!
Our resident scorpion is a jack of all trades.
When he’s not playing piano for his church or jamming out in his spare time, you can find our talented Competitions director over-eating at KBBQ, binging GoT for the fifth time or even researching how he can be next heir to the Iron Throne through watching documentaries on historic swords!
Samuel (or Sting for short) is always up for a chat so say hello to him if you bump into him at uni or evem bring out his COMPETITIVE side by challenging him to a game of Splendour or any other game in his massive collection of board games.
With the spirit of a corgis, she’s all things cute and lovely from Samoyeds to baby penguins. Looking for someone to share a bingsoo with? Nicky will always be down, but can’t guarantee there will be any left with a sweet tooth like hers. At other times, you can find her sipping a milk tea whilst on the edge of her seat reading a good mysterious, detective novel… or just online shopping. But don’t be fooled she’s no couch potato, she loves staying active by playing badminton with her family or exploring the world with multilingual skills.
If you feel like you’ve seen Leo around somewhere before, you’re probably right! When he’s not photographing at your special event and running his Selective Photography business, Leo is likely to be found working at a client site for his PwC cadetship, being a god at Excel or attending meetings as a board member of a not for profit. Leo’s music tastes are just as wide-ranging as his commitments – being both a fangirl of Selena Gomez and an enthusiast of Deadmau5’s beats. When he does find that rarity called ‘spare time’, Leo loves to travel the world (recently globetrotting across Europe!) and especially loves the experience of flying on planes. Don’t let his busy nature deter you from saying hello though – Leo is always sweet, smiley and down for a chat, so be sure to give him a wave!
Don’t be intimidated by the 859+ likes on his facebook profile – you can always count on Geng to provide his comedic commentary, witty remarks and infinite wisdom.
You’ll never find Mr Josh “I do law and HD it” Geng NOT hyped to the max due to his consistent Redbull consumption, and consequently, without his trusty fidget spinners.
But even then he’s always down for an easy going conversation or yet another meal at the campus GYG for his usual beef nachos with guac.
Despite always business ready with his “everyday casual” outfit composed of a dress shirt and pants (even in summer!?!?), our Sponsorships director is not hot, NEVER HOT and always down for a party!
A proven ‘god-tier’ Mafia player, no wonder Michael takes the helm as one of our Sponsorships Directors. He is perhaps one of the most competitive individuals you’ll ever meet. When he’s not five steps ahead in a board game, Michael is busy hustling as an investment analyst. When he’s not acing it on the tennis court, he’s busy penciling his name onto the Dean’s List.
Now you can give it a go, but Michael doesn’t ever seem to break his poker face. Even when someone challenges his undefeated status on Mario Kart, or when he’s “legit one win” off Global Elite in CS:GO. Rumour has it that Michael has mortal qualities. This includes his love for Momo, his golden retriever! He also enjoys spicy dishes as much as he loves dishing out spicy banter. Shooketh? Find out for yourself! You can catch Michael around uni in the CompSci labs, or even teaching his own PASS classes for finance (ask him for tips!). We are very lucky to have Michael leading our sponsor meetings, and as a member of the Board for 2018.
Our lovely HR director Nicole will always greet you with a bubbly smile! Her sweet personality was probably concocted by her secret obsession with milk teas (Legend says she once consumed a milk tea every day for a week!) Whenever Nicole isn’t fawning over the hottest Korean celebrities, you’ll probably see her petting any animal she encounters on the street. This full-time animal lover has an uncommon habit of never showing her full face whenever she takes selfies, however don’t be fooled! Nicole is one of the most easy-going and kindest souls, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with her throughout the year!
HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR
If you ever need to organise an event, pack for a roadtrip, or whip up a gourmet meme, Jonson is the man for the job! You can find him at your nearest internet café, where he often plays League of Legends until the early hours of the morning. Due to his questionable sleep schedule (0 to 2 hours a night???) Jonson is always available to talk or to share a meme – but only if it’s dank. This certifiable Pokemon master enjoys watching MMA and Taiwanese romance films, and is secretly a huge fan of TWICE… so if you bump into him at uni, sending him a SIGNAL will be sure to make him CHEER UP!
HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR
Introducing BSOC’s one and only Partnerships Director, Ventura! When she’s not sealing BSOC Partnerships with Maccas, Dominos or MJ Bale to get you a good deal, you can catch her at music festivals, engaging in a serious phone game match or listening to some American and Korean hip hop. Outside her university life, Ventura is a self-described “retail slave” due to the need for FUND$ to support a chronic case of wanderlust. You’ll be able to spot her at our BSOC events from her distinctive light-coloured hair (silver at time of writing), most likely sipping on some milk tea. Even though she’s been told she looks intimidating, Ventura’s infectious (and tad dorky) personality make her one of the most friendly directors on the Board, so don’t be afraid to say hi!
Meet Jordan, yet another edition to BSOCs South-West Sydney Squad. Jordan is our bubbly and likeable Philanthropy director. When he’s not making serious cash between his two jobs you may find him chowing down on Viet food in Cabra.
Despite being perpetually on his grind, Jordan always makes time to connect with his friends so if you’re looking for a cheeky d’n’m or gossip session look no further. Jordan is the life of the party and definitely knows how to have a good time but deep beneath his excitable, friendly and bubbly personality is a conscientious and hardworking young man with a passion for charitable works and a strong passion to perform. So if you see Jordan around uni, make sure to say hello!
Meet Kezia, BSOC’s super excitable other half of the Phil team! Having lived a life of privilege, this self professed lover of aestethically pleasing K-pop idols is now looking to give back! When she’s not at K-con screaming for her bias, Kezia enjoys confusing water (or juice) with soju, letting people know she lives in the Hills, and scaring people more with her jump-screams than the actual movie. If you want to catch a glimpse of this lady, you can find her at Events cinemas (getting that $2 movie discount) or fitting in a nap at uni while she tries to recover from all those nights binging an emotional K-drama series (it’s a talent). Eventually, if you’re lucky, you might even spot her adorable white fluff ball doggo too! So if you see this vibrant personality around, don’t be afraid to come up and say hi for a GUCCI time!
Backed with a library of memes and an arsenal of lame jokes, you won’t miss this fine specimen as legends say he boasts a height of two metres. If you ever want to find BSOC’s very own Mac Alexander, all you need to do is look for the tallest white boy in the room who is inseparable from our other IT Director, Patrick Wan. Mac is very distinguishable in the room as he is always looking for banter with a cheerful smile on his face. To no surprise, with his impressive height, Mac also enjoys playing basketball. So if you ever want to one-on-one with someone from BSOC, Mac is your boy. All-in-all, our IT Director is one of the easiest going people to talk to and you will always enjoy the great bants he converses. So don’t be afraid to strike a conversation with Mac, one of our friendliest Directors, around campus!
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR
Some theories say that Pat is absolutely out of this world! You can catch Pat cycling during the early hours of the day, flying gliders (think planes with no engines), and pondering on all things aviation, as he aspires to be a commercial pilot. Despite his busy schedule, Pat is always willing to lend a helpful hand, having a portable charger with him at all times. So don’t be shy to grab a burger or ramen meal with him and listen to tropical house and electronic music to get to know more about him!
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR
Let Joanna Cao, the one and only queen of marketing slay you with her unbeatable skills at Super Smash Bros, flip cup soccer and speed. However, she wasn’t quite as speedy on the slopes as she is with cards where she was spotted at Bsoc’s 2017 Ski Trip chilling at the kiddie slopes. Never fear though she’ll come bouncing right back and 1v1 you at naming every single Pokemon because she’s never gonna give Mew up and never gonna let Mew down.
Don’t be threatened by her mad CP skills, she has undoubtedly one of the most fun and genuine personalities so feel free to say hi because she would definitely love to show you pictures of her cute doggo.
Wouldn’t you just love to indulge in a slice of rich, velvety chocolate cake? Well, look no further than John. As BSOC’s very own domestic god, John loves all things food! He’s an expert at cooking and an even bigger expert at eating. When John’s not drowning in delicious delights, you’ll find him watching Sci-Fi. From classics like Firefly to the latest Marvel films, nothing with time travel, space and aliens ever passes by John.
Oh, did I mention Aliens? Well beware, John is a horror movie buff. Pennywise would be WISE to avoid this man with no fear. So, if you’re ever craving delicious food or looking for Sci-Fi recommendations, make sure you come up and say hi!
Click! Click! The cameras click away as Nelson arrives, never missing a red-carpet moment. He may sometimes be fashionably late, but he dresses with finesse and never forgets the finishing touch – a splash of flamboyant colour for his outfit to match his smile, one of the brightest in town. The saying that laughter is contagious definitely holds true when you’re around him and soon, you’ll find yourself mesmerised by his bubbly yet infectious personality. He can pull off any coloured suit (most famously his pink one!) as mediocrity simply does not exist in his dictionary. To fuel his creative roots and his burning passion for film-making, you’ll catch Nelson peering into the lenses of Wes Anderson or David Fincher, or even praying to Shrek on a daily basis!
Our Publications director, Taylor, is all about the aesthetics. When she isn’t busy Taylor-ing the aesthetics of her latest Indesign project, she’ll be studying movies from the Renaissance period or appreciating the aesthetically pleasing views of various travel locations. Despite her love for travelling and adventure, she bears a strong dislike towards the heat, and interestingly, wearing shoes. On the rare occasion that you might catch this LAM in a BAAAd mood, it may be because she chose to wear thick and uncomfortable shoes on a hot and sunny day. However, don’t let her delicate nature and interests fool you! She is surprisingly sporty (former state footy player!!) and can be very competitive. A very approachable and bubbly hedgehog lover, Taylor is always fun to be around. Be sure to ask her anything related to design, travelling or art – she’d be happy to help!
Meet Lisa, the resident Bingsoo Queen of BSOC, successful law student and one of our fun-loving publications directors. With her infectious smile Lisa is known for her warm-hearted nature and ability to offer Confucian levels of advice that never fails to impart pearls of wisdom to all those who are fortunate enough to hear it. Likewise, with her boundless energy Lisa never fails to utilise her positive and open-minded attitude whilst approaching all situations. With such ability to care it’s no surprise that Lisa helps push all those around her to new heights and break old limits… just make sure that you’re well away from alcohol as this self-proclaimed heavy weight will have you slumped on the table in no time! So, what are you waiting for? Come say hi to our Pubs Director and soon discover that she is an incredible asset to herself and all those around her!
